I could have been anything is a series of illustrations imagining naked non-human forms as a way of exploring the sexualisation and othering placed onto trans bodies. These figures are scary, intimate and unfamiliar. Their alienness becomes a visual language for the way trans embodiment is often treated as both hyper-accessible (“so have you had the surgery yet?”) and deeply fetishised.

I have installed a few of these works in public bathrooms as a way of responding directly to the so-called “bathroom debate”, reframing these contested spaces as sites of alienation, surveillance and absurdity. In this context, the alien body becomes a stand-in for the trans body: imagined as threat, curiosity, or impossibility, while simply existing.
